Avengers: Endgame Almost Had No Marketing and More Nerd News

Anthony and Joe Russo recently talked to Empire Magazine and revealed they had an idea for the marketing of Avengers: Endgame; don’t have any.

While speaking to the magazine, Joe Russo told them the idea they were kicking around, saying;

We did (talk about scaling back marketing). We talked about all scales of marketing.  The thing that’s most important to us is that we preserve the surprise of the narrative. When I was a kid and saw The Empire Strikes Back at 11am on the day it opened, and sat there until 10pm watching it back to back to back, it so profoundly moved me because I didn’t know a damn thing about the story I was going to watch. We’re trying to replicate that experience.

This is an intriguing idea, and I love that they were trying to minimize the amount of leaks that came out of the film.  The fact they altered and outright added scenes in the trailer for Infinity War shows you the dedication the Russo’s have to making the cinematic experience enjoyable for all.

Joe Russo also said last may that fans are smart because the “….audience can watch a trailer and basically tell you what’s gonna happen in the film.”

Trailers as they were are outdated.  The need to show everything is outdated, and fans openly rebel against the concept.  Hype makes movies anticipated, not trailers.  The issue is that many studios outsource their trailers to secondary outlets, and they’re not worried about spoiling anything, they’re simply trying to entice the movie-goer to go see the film.  Think of Cloverfield, the hit J.J. Abrams film from 2008; they literally show you the climax of the film in the trailer.  As the heroes escape into the helicopter and fly over the city, the trailer shows the monster emerge from the smoke and ash to attack the main characters.

Why would you show that?  I applaud the Russo’s for their desire to keep things close to the vest.
