GameStop’s Future Remains in Doubt and More Nerd News!

Gamestop just screwed themselves.  The chain was set to sell itself to a new owner, one that would restructure and rebuild the brand, but the company announced on Tuesday that the pending potential sales were off.  Due to this announcement, the brand’s stocks took a dive.  The gaming retailer saw a dip of 25% on Tuesday morning alone, something that should of been expected as these trends are quite predictable.

The reason for their decision to end finding a buyer came down to a bad offers in their opinion.  The term ‘acceptable terms’ was used, which is a fancy way of saying “we didn’t like the offer”.  In a statement, GameStop sadi;

The Board undertook a comprehensive review process, including discussions with third parties regarding a potential sale of the company.  GameStop’s Board has now terminated efforts to pursue a sale of the company due to the lack of available financing on terms that would be commercially acceptable to a prospective acquiror(sic).

The brand is on the ropes these days, with attempts to expand their sales offerings falling short of desires goals and games no longer flying off the shelf as they once did.  A total rebranding might be in order or an expansion of merchandise needed.  Either way expect big changes from GameStop unless they want to find themselves going the way of Toys R’ Us.

In Other News…

Speaking of Toys R’ Us, former executives are attempting to bring back big box toy stores under the name Tru Kids Inc.  The brand originally thought about doing mini stores in established stores; for instance a grocery store having displays in an isle dubbed Geoffrey’s Toy Box.  While that is an option still, the seller is reaching out to manufacturers of toys for another idea according to the New York Post.  Tru Kids Inc is made up of former Toys R Us execs are the company owns the rights to the names of the brand.  The issue lies on past relationships being mended.  Companies like Mattell and Hasbro were left in a lurch when Toys R Us closed, and layoffs had to happen.  So a mending process is necessary. Though for mutual survival, it may behoove the companies to let bygones be bygones in order to avoid further issues with sales.

Yesterday we got our first look at Harley Quinn and The Bird’s of Prey film and…ugh.  It’s not great.  With a terrible song, jump cuts to fast to see anything of importance, and a heavy reliance on alcohol to sell the characters, it comes off as a cheesy late 00’s dance party music video from the likes of Grimes.
