EA Defends Loot Boxes, Walmart Rumored to Reveal New Video Games Before Formal Announcements and More! – ComicCorp News

EA Responds to Loot Box Legal Issues – For those unaware, Loot Boxes are single handily killing video games.  They’re micro-transactions that don’t even give you something specific, instead you’re buying a box of an unknown item at a set price.  Yes, if picking blindly in the hopes of winning a rare item sounds like gambling, you’re not alone.  EA is the biggest company abusing this, allowing fans to buy in game loot boxes in various games, with no guarantee that they’ll get the thing they were hoping for.

EA’s Chief Executive Officer Andrew Wilson addressed the issues with Loot Boxes, something Europe has already cracked down on.  In regards to the upcoming FIFA ’18, the game is set to feature something called FIFA Ultimate Team.  Wilson was asked if the new component would fall under the Europe’s new redefined restrictions of gambling in video games, saying they “…evaluated and established that programs like FIFA Ultimate Team are not gambling.”  Wilson also goes on to say that EA actively disagrees with the labeling of Loot Boxes as gambling.

As described on WWG, the system on FIFA works like this;

In FIFA, though you can’t purchase a player in the same way Battlefront tempts players to purchase a hero, players can use real life money to “pack” a player in order to increase their worth throughout the title’s entirety. Unlike the Battlefront controversy, at least FIFA seems more balanced. They don’t necessarily lean on players to make in-game purchases, whereas the Star Wars game blocked desired base characters behind a pay wall when it was first launched.

Quick Hits – ‘Predator’ teaser trailer is set to debut tomorrow.  Walmart seemingly published pre-orders for unannounced games including Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell “2018”,  Just Cause 4, the Xbox One version of Final Fantasy VII: Remake, Borderlands 3, a new Gears of War, Forza Horizon, Insurgency, and others.  This is just a rumor for right now, so take it with a pinch of salt.   “Captain Marvel” has cast Annette Bening.  Simon Pegg has announced that he wants to play Marvel’s Captain Britain.  Polygon published a video of ‘God of War’ actor Chris Judge doing ‘Dad Jokes’.
