Bendis is Ruining Superman, ‘Daredevil’ in Trouble Now Too’? and More! – ComicCorp News

Bendis Ruining Superman/Lois Dynamic – To say fans are enraged with Brian Michael Bendis’ run on the Superman titles would be a grave understatement.  Since the #1000th issue of the book came out in April, which sold well over 500,000 units in two months, sales for the titles have dropped drastically.  The combined next sales of Superman #1 and Action Comics #1001 sold over 200,000 copies, with Superman #1 pulling in an impressive 133k in it’s first month on sale.

But from there?  Things get ugly as we go from August to today.  In August, #2 of Superman fell to just 77k purchases, while Action Comics 1002 dropped to 62k.   In October, Superman fell to 67k, while Action Comics fell to 58k.

Part of the issue was Bendis’ desire to put unnecessary family drama into the book, with Superman’s wife Lois Lane and son Jonathan Kent going off into space with his villainous father for Jon’s own good.  In this week’s Action Comics 1004, we see that Lois is back but she left Jon behind.  Lois blatantly states that it was too dangerous for her, but she left her son behind anyway.  Her 12 year old son.  Her son, of 12 years old.  Her son, whom the whole world knows she has.  Left her son.  In space.  With a man who tried to destroy the world.  Keep in mind that this was the woman who wouldn’t let her father, who is far less dangerous than Clark’s, even meet their son for the longest time due to her concerns for her son, who again is only 12, because her father posed too big of a threat.  That made sense, but those were different writers, who had a clue.  Not like Brian Michael Bendis.

Ugh.  Bendis.

Then she makes excuses, has a late night “meet up” with Lex that’s supposed to make us think she’s cheating on her husband, denies, lies, and destroys her family for her own career before using sex to change to the toipc.

Because Bendis.

Jim Johnson of CBR described this secence the best by saying;

Lois’ need to find herself, cavort about in secret, and engage in a clandestine encounter with another man aren’t exactly examples of all-important open communication in a marriage. It’s not like Lois doesn’t love Clark, and she even stresses that she’s not wanting to divorce him, but their discussion has all the hallmarks of a married couple on the verge of separation. After their talk, their previous separation by circumstance now feels more like a trial separation between a troubled wife and husband. And she’s pushing for it to continue.

What made Peter J. Tomasi and Dan Jurgens’ (Superman and Action Comics respectively) runs so good was both utilized the family dynamic like a real family.  They grew together, worked together, talked together.  Everyone was on the same page, or were willing to find ways of getting one another there.  Superman/Clark even gave up his cozy farm so that Lois could be closer to her work.  There was never a need to be so diabolical in their decision making.  It made Superman and Action Comics a hit, and was constantly one of the best set of book sales for DC.

This reeks of typical Bendis crap.  Baiting and switching for the sake of it, and causing strife and contention where there doesn’t need to be any.  It’s also very clear that Bendis wants nothing to do with Jon Kent, even though he’s actively bringing back Connor Ken (clone Superboy) in his take on the Young Justice series.

Update on John Williams – Iconic composer John Williams was taken to the hospital earlier this week after suffering a last-minute illness.  While no word on what struck the iconic musician down as of yet has been released, good news is abound as the Royal Albert Hall claims Williams is on his way to recovery.  The Royal Albert Hall was set to host him and the London Symphony Orchestra for a special concert.  The show will go on, with Williams’ good friend Dirk Bosse taking over.

Netflix Moving on From Marvel? – Iron Fist and Luke Cage were allegedly cancelled due to lack of buzz and possible ratings.  Yet, the strongest of the five Marvel shows, Daredevil, might get the ax next.  Speaking to IndieWire, Daredevil showrunner Erik Olseon expressed concern over his show, saying;

I don’t know what the future holds in terms of Netflix and Marvel and the new Disney streaming service and all of that. I’m not really privy to any of that stuff. That’s way above my pay grade.

Seems like either they’re moving over to the Disney platform or the Defenders pocket-universe is over.  Personally, I’d love for the five heroes (Iron Fist, Luke Cage, Daredevil, Jessica Jones and The Punisher) to merge shows and launch a new Defenders series on either Hulu or the Disney platform.

Quick Hits – The cast and crew of Shazam is returning to Toronto for reshoots, which has lead many to speculate on line this may be for a hush-hush cameo of Henry Cavill’s Superman.  Speaking of Superman, rumor has it that the black-suited Superman in the Elseworlds crossover may be a villainous take on the Man of Steel.  Scott Lobdell seemingly confirms by not confirming that Ric Grayson won’t last forever, as this is a personality and identity change from within; thus implying it’ll be corrected eventually.   Funko Pop has released new Golden Girls and Star Wars Pez dispensers.
