Geoff Johns New Role With DC Comics, Lucifer’s Time Expiring? and More!

Major Geoff Johns News – Geoff Johns rocked the world of comics today when it was announced that he’s leaving his post as Chief Creative Officer with DC Entertainment, being replaced by legendary illustrator Jim Lee. Johns is launching Mad Ghost Productions, a new entity that will feature him working on films, television and comics. Johns will remain with Warner Bros., taking a writer-producer deal for films.

Apparently this may be part of a group restructuring, which saw former DC Entertainment President Diane Nelson lose her job. It should be noted this does not mean Johns is done with DC or even the world of comics. His first big project is working on the Green Lanterns film, more on this later. His second big project will be a new comic imprint called The Killing Zone. The imprint will look at new, lesser known or dormant character under the DC banner.

But the truly big news; He’ll be taking the helm of a new Shazam comic series which is scheduled to drop in the fall, the first time the character has had a solo comic in some time. He’ll also take on the Three Jokers storyline he started back in the Rebirth comic, illustrated by Jason Fabok.

Green Lantern Corp News – We know that Geoff Johns is writing the film, along with John’s Mad Ghost Productions.  The film is listed on the Mad Ghost website,  and it lists the film as in development.  It also mentions though, that the film will in fact feature both Hal Jordan and John Stewart as the films lead . Johns rewrote the expectations of what to expect from the Green Lantern franchise in the early to mid ’00s.  So there is no better author or writer to take over the Lantern film franchise than Johns .

Lucifer Time Running Out? – Lucifer was cancelled by Fox but might still have a shot to come back.  However it’s being alluded to by Lauren German that the time to save the show is running out.  Apparently all talent contracts expire on June 16th, which is this Saturday.  As of right now Amazon is trying to secure the franchise.  Amazon Studios’ Jennifer Salke confirmed they’re talking about Lucifer, saying;

We were talking about Lucifer.  I’m not sure where we are on that. I know that international, especially the UK group, was really bullish on that show, I haven’t checked in on that today (Thursday), but I heard conversations were ongoing on that yesterday.

Amazon has already saved The Expanse, after being cancelled by SyFy.

Quick Hits – Geoff Johns has a backstage role in the Shazam! film and apparently, his run with the character at the start of the New 52 will be the basis for the film.  Friday the 13th: The Game will not be making new DLC for fans due to an ongoing lawsuit involving Victor Miller, the original scriptwriter for the first film, in his attempts to get back the franchise.  Rian Johnson is still set to make his own trilogy for Star Wars (god help us all) and it’s at least two years from even beginning.
